October 31, 2018

On November 6, 2018 the Holland Hurricanes will host the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association National Men’s Soccer Championship at the Terry Fox Sports Complex in Cornwall, PEI. The championship will conclude on Saturday, November 10.

The theme of this year’s championship is “Saluting Our Veterans”.

“We are pleased to pay tribute to the service and sacrifice made by our veterans to ensure we enjoy the freedom to compete and participate in sport in Canada,” shared Director of Athletics and Recreation at Holland College, Albert Roche.

2018 marks the 100thanniversary of the end of World War 1.  In 1918, in the 11thmonth on the 11thday in the 11thhour, the fighting stopped.

The Hurricanes have extended an invitation to all Veterans, Royal Canadian Legion members and Department of Veterans Affairs staff to attend the championship as guests of the Hurricanes by simply displaying their identification at the main entrance to the field.

“Soccer nationals is always conducted during the week where Remembrance Day falls, and it was natural for us to salute the sacrifice made by veterans and their families, especially at the 100th anniversary of the end of World War 1.”

The championship, which will feature the top eight collegiate men’s soccer teams from across Canada, will include the hometown, Holland Hurricanes, and be played at the Terry Fox Sports Complex in Cornwall.

Also competing in the championship is the Ahuntsic Indiens (Montreal, QC), Capilano Blues (North Vancouver, BC), Humber Hawks (Toronto, ON), Langara Falcons (Vancouver, BC), NAIT Ooks (Edmonton, AB), Sheridan Bruins (Oakville, ON) and the STU Tommies (Fredericton, NB).

This season the Hurricanes finished the regular season with a record of 9-2-1 and in first place in the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association.  They defeated the MSVU Mystics and STU Tommies this past weekend in Halifax, NS to win their fifth-straight ACAA Championship.

Last season the Hurricanes took home the CCAA National bronze medal from Nanaimo, British Columbia; the second national medal in team history.

The Hurricanes will play their first game of the championship at 3pm on Wednesday, November 7.  The tournament schedule, including matchups, will be released during Wednesday afternoon.
